Pike coverlet fabrics: waffle, honeycomb and cable pattern
In Türkiye, pike is the name for a light summer coverlet used instead of a duvet. The name comes from piqué, and the fabrics all have a raised texture. The texture adds loft while keeping the fabric light and breathable.
Three common structures
| Type | Construction | Look |
|---|---|---|
| Waffle | Woven | Raised square grid with fairly large cells |
| Honeycomb | Woven | Small cells shaped like a honeycomb |
| Cable pattern | Woven | Cable or braid pattern, like hand knitting |
Waffle
The weave forms square cells with raised edges and a recessed centre. The surface traps air and touches the skin less. Cell size varies between fabrics.
Honeycomb
Honeycomb is also woven. Its cells are smaller and closer together than waffle, so the texture looks finer. It is common in baby coverlets and light summer throws.
Cable pattern
The Turkish name, örgü pike, means knitted pike, but the fabric is woven. Its surface shows raised cable and braid motifs that look like hand knitting. Being woven, it does not stretch like a knit.
Uses
- Summer coverlets in single and double sizes
- Baby coverlets and blankets
- Sofa throws and bedspreads
- Waffle bathrobes and towels
When ordering
Ask for composition, weight and width in writing. Most pike fabrics are 100% cotton, with some cotton-polyester blends. Textured fabrics can shrink in the first wash, so ask for the shrinkage rate. Put your finished size in the enquiry, since coverlet sizes vary by brand.
In the TkanIstanbul catalog, pike fabrics are grouped as waffle, honeycomb and cable pattern. Specifications for each series are on its series page.
