Waterproof mattress protector fabric: face fabric, TPU membrane and uses
A mattress protector goes under the sheet to keep liquid, sweat and dirt away from the mattress. In Türkiye it is called alez, a word also used for quilted pads that are not waterproof. This guide covers waterproof protector fabric.
The layers
The fabric has two layers: a face fabric that touches the skin or the sheet, and a thin TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) membrane underneath. The membrane is laminated, meaning bonded, to the face fabric so the two act as one.
| Face fabric | Properties |
|---|---|
| Terry (single-sided loops) | Absorbs quickly; feels slightly warmer |
| Tencel (lyocell) | Smooth and cool, handles moisture well |
| Knit (jersey) | Stretches, quiet; fitted styles grip the mattress |
TPU membrane and breathability
A TPU membrane blocks liquid but lets some water vapour through, so it sleeps cooler than older PVC backings. PVC is stiffer and can crinkle when you move; TPU is softer and quieter. Breathability depends on the membrane type and thickness, so ask for the figure on the mill's technical sheet.
Uses
- Mattress protectors, flat or fitted
- Children's beds and cots
- Hotel beds
- Elderly care and hospital beds
- Pillow protectors
Washing and wear
TPU is sensitive to high heat and harsh chemicals. Hot tumble drying and bleach can crack the membrane or make it peel away from the face fabric. If the protectors will go through a hotel laundry, confirm the wash and drying temperatures the fabric can take before you order.
When ordering
Ask for the face fabric composition and weight, membrane type, total weight and width in writing. Specifications for each series are on its series page.
