Bedspread fabrics: chenille, jacquard and pom-pom styles
A bedspread covers the bed during the day and sets much of the look of the room. Texture, pattern and drape matter most, and the fabrics are usually heavier than bedding fabrics.
Chenille
Chenille is a type of yarn: short fibres are held at right angles around a thin core, so the yarn looks like a caterpillar. Fabric woven from it is soft and plush with a velvety feel. Chenille bedspreads are mostly polyester or cotton-polyester.
Jacquard bedspreads
In jacquard the pattern is woven on a jacquard loom, with no printing. It shows on both sides, often in reverse colours on the back. Jacquards can also be woven with chenille yarn. Cotton, polyester and viscose blends are common.
Pom-pom and textured styles
These styles carry pom-poms, tassels, fringe or a long-pile texture on the surface or along the edges. The trim is either sewn on during making up or woven in with the fabric. Ask how the trim is attached and how it should be washed.
Common sizes
| Product | Common size |
|---|---|
| Single bedspread | about 200 x 220 cm |
| Double bedspread | about 240 x 260 cm |
Sizes vary by brand and bed height, since the spread should hang over the sides and the foot of the bed. Give your own size in the enquiry. The fabric width decides whether the spread can be cut in one piece or needs a seam.
